Record Grading Standards

We use the Record Collector Guild – Grading Guide as a reference when grading our stock.

Mint (M)

Unused, Un-played record with all sleeves in factory condition

99% of the time we deal with used records only & we will NEVER sell an opened record even if un-played as mint condition.

Please do note; This does NOT mean the record may not suffer from static or crackling.

New records are not guaranteed to be clean or static free, however mint from us will be 100% guaranteed to be an un-played record.

Near Mint (NM)

An opened record which may have been played a few times only or not at all; Shop stock for example or demo/review record, again which may not have been played. Vinyl rarely played but may have static crackle from long storage, the centre labels will have no spindle marks or damage. No vinyl wear. May have the lightest marks on the cover from handling or storage but no visible damage.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

Note: Some dealers describe this between VG+ / VG++ to NM-, we feel this does not define anything particularly useful or specific, therefore we try to physically describe any apparent defects separately. A played record with possible minor sound degradation, for example crackle and maybe minor wear at quiet moments in the recording, possible wear apparent at high pitches.

The vinyl surface may have hairline scratches or scuffs or marks, but only very light which do not affect playback. Cover/s totally original in undamaged condition, no holes (unless from an original out of stock/discontinued product), no rips or tears and no wear through any of the edges. Possibly will have light marks, scuffs or creases around the edges.

Very Good (VG)

A played record. No skips or jumps when playing, likely track noise (crackling, popping from dust or dirt), or minor wear degradation from being played many times, but does not seriously effect listening.

The vinyl surface is likely to have light surface scratches and/or marks, but does not adversely affect playback. Sleeves all intact and original with no deep scratches but may be creased, show vinyl ring marks and/or worn on some parts of the cover’s edges, front and/or rear for example.

Good (G)

A heavily played record, record playable with no skips or jumps but will suffer from crackling & wear. Likely to have vinyl surface scratches, could be deep.

Sleeves could be bent, worn, torn or scratched for example, but all are intact with no evidence of repair (glue/tape).

Fair (F)

A heavily played record, scratched, plays and suffers from loss of sound quality, might skip or stick, may be warped and the surface is likely to be heavily surface marked and/or scratches.

Covers and sleeves are all with the record, but likely to be worn and/or damaged, repaired, torn or ripped. Likely to be of interest to someone looking for a rare record or of specific interest but can’t pay mint prices.

Poor (P)

Record scratched & serious deterioration of sound, may be warped, playable but expect playback problems such as sticking &/or skipping & heavy wear. Sleeves damaged or missing.

We aim to source & supply records in Very Good condition or better, however there are times when we feel a record in worse condition may be desirable to our customers and we will keep it in stock or for example the cover may be Poor to Good condition, but the record is very often Very Good condition or better.

Records are listened to once only and not always through unless we find issues and investigate further. This is to prevent further wear. Played on a high quality record player before listing.

Record and sound quality cannot be defined in great detail as each individual perception of sound quality for example differs, therefore we will highlight any imperfections we see or hear.

The same applies to the visual check of the record sleeve, internal sleeve and any other artwork, etc….
